Why Start in Kibera?
Kibera is home to over 250,000 people, many unbanked and many running informal businesses without access to reliable digital finance. Bitcoin changes that.
The Challenge
- Limited access to traditional banking
- Currency inflation eroding savings
- Cash-only economy limiting growth
- Financial exclusion of informal workers
Our Approach
- Lightning Network for instant micro-payments
- Peer-to-peer Bitcoin training programs
- Circular merchant network in Kibera
- Waste-to-Bitcoin incentive programs
Circular Resilience Programs
Four pillars driving Bitcoin adoption from the ground up in Kibera's informal economy.
Micro-Merchants & Traders
The Micro-Merchants & Traders program works directly with local business owners across Kibera to integrate Bitcoin as a practical payment method, backed by onboarding, point-of-sale support, and ongoing field mentorship.
Women's Upcycling Collective
The Women's Upcycling Collective combines craftsmanship training, material access, and Bitcoin commerce so women in Kibera can build sustainable businesses from discarded materials.
Waste Incentives Program
The Waste Incentives Program uses Bitcoin rewards to turn cleanup work into income, motivating youth and community members to collect, sort, and route waste toward recycling, upcycling, or safe disposal.
Boda-Boda "Ride to Freedom"
The Boda-Boda "Ride to Freedom" program trains riders in Bitcoin, helps them earn and save sats, and provides compliance guidance so they can secure licensing and insurance using their own funds.
“Through Afribit, I completed my driving classes and set up my first Bitcoin wallet. I can save sats toward my licensing fees and still spend within the circular economy — supporting other riders and helping the whole community grow.”
